Mehndi Outfit Guide: Colours, Fabrics and Jewellery for Brides, Family and Guests

The mehndi is the most colourful event of a Pakistani wedding. Unlike the barat, there is no single "right" colour, but there are a few traditions worth knowing.

The classic mehndi palette

  • Yellow and mustard — traditional for mayun and ubtan; it hides turmeric stains.
  • Parrot and bottle green — the classic mehndi colour, often paired with pink or orange.
  • Orange and rust — warm and festive under fairy lights.
  • Hot pink and fuchsia — modern and photogenic, especially with green.

Many families pick a two-colour theme for the bride's side. Ask before you shop.

What the bride wears

Brides usually choose a lehenga or gharara in yellow, green or a multi-colour patchwork, with gota, mirror work or phulkari. It should be lighter than the barat dress, because the mehndi involves dancing and sitting on the floor. Floral jewellery (gajray, tikka of fresh flowers) or light Kundan sets are common.

Sisters and close family

Family often coordinates: same colour, different cuts. Lehengas, short frocks with sharara, or angrakha-style shirts work well. Choose fabrics that move: chiffon, net, raw silk — see formal and bridal wear.

Guests

Guests should match the energy, not the bride. A brightly coloured embroidered lawn or chiffon suit, a printed dupatta and jhumkas are enough. Avoid all-white and avoid outshining the bride with a heavy red.

Men at the mehndi

A kurta in yellow, green or an off-white with a coloured waistcoat is the norm. Cotton or khaddar kurtas, chooridar or shalwar, and Peshawari chappal or khussa. Browse men's kurtas.

Jewellery and footwear

  • Mehndi jewellery is playful: chandbalis, jhumkas, mathapatti, kangan stacks. See jewellery.
  • Wear flat khussa — you will dance. Read our khussa guide.

Practical tips

  • Darker fabrics hide mehndi and oil stains; very light silk does not.
  • Mirror work snags dupattas: carry pins.
  • Order at least two weeks before the event and try everything on as soon as it arrives — Stylica allows exchanges within 7 days of delivery for unused items.
