Khussa Guide: Multani Khussa, Kolhapuri and Tilla Work — How to Choose and Care

Khussa is the traditional flat, closed-toe shoe of Punjab, and Multan is one of its most famous homes. Each pair is cut, stitched and embroidered by hand, which is why no two are exactly alike.

Types you will see

  • Multani khussa: soft leather, pointed or curled toe, often with colourful thread or mirror work. Light and flexible.
  • Tilla khussa: gold or silver metallic thread embroidery — the wedding favourite, for brides and grooms.
  • Kundan / stone khussa: stones and pearls on velvet; best for formal events, less for long walks.
  • Plain leather khussa: everyday wear, especially for men with kurta shalwar.
  • Kolhapuri style: open sandals with a toe ring; cooler in summer.

Getting the size right

Real leather khussa feels tight for the first few days and then shapes to your foot. If you are between sizes, take your usual size for leather, and half a size up for velvet or heavily embroidered pairs, which do not stretch as much.

Comfort tips

  • A thin cushioned insole makes all-day weddings much easier.
  • Rub the inside heel with a little candle wax or coconut oil to stop rubbing.
  • Wear them at home for an hour a day for three days before the event.

Care

  • Keep embroidered pairs in a cloth bag, not plastic (leather needs air).
  • Wipe leather with a damp cloth; never soak it.
  • Store tilla work away from damp and perfume, which tarnish metallic thread.

Matching with outfits

Gold tilla goes with almost every formal colour. Mirror work suits mehndi outfits (see our mehndi guide); plain leather suits office kurtis and men's shalwar kameez. Going to a wedding? Our wedding guest dress-code guide covers what to wear for each event.
