What to Wear to a Pakistani Wedding as a Guest: Nikkah, Barat and Walima Dress Codes
Each wedding event has its own unwritten dress code. What to wear (and avoid) at the nikkah, barat and walima, for women and men.
By Ali Hamza · · Updated
Pakistani weddings run over several days, and guests are expected to dress differently for each. These are the common conventions — local and family traditions always come first.
Nikkah
Often in a mosque or at home, sometimes combined with another event. Dress modestly and elegantly: pastel or off-white suits for women with a dupatta that can cover the head, and white or light shalwar kameez for men, often with a waistcoat.
Barat
The most formal event. Guests wear rich colours and heavy fabrics: chiffon, organza, velvet in winter, with embroidery or sequins. Good choices: emerald, wine, navy, gold, teal.
Avoid: bridal red (the bride's colour) and anything heavier than what the bride's family is likely to wear.
Men wear a sherwani-lite look (prince coat) only if close family; otherwise a dark shalwar kameez with a waistcoat, or a formal suit.
Walima
Hosted by the groom's family; slightly calmer than the barat. Pastels, silver, champagne and soft pinks are popular for women; for men, a suit or a light-coloured kurta with a waistcoat.
Mehndi
Bright and festive — read our mehndi outfit guide.
Accessories
- One statement piece is enough: big jhumkas or a heavy necklace, not both.
- Clutch in a metallic tone, and comfortable heels or khussa.
A budget that covers all events
Buy one formal outfit for the barat and re-style a second one for walima and nikkah with different dupattas and jewellery. Browse formal and bridal, men's waistcoats and jewellery, or ask Amina for "wedding guest outfit under PKR 10,000".
