Kundan vs Polki vs Jadau: The Difference, the Price and How to Care for Them

Walk into any jewellery section in Pakistan and you will hear "Kundan", "Polki" and "Jadau" in the same breath. They are related, but not the same.

Kundan: the setting technique

Kundan is a way of setting stones: thin layers of refined gold foil are pressed around each stone to hold it, with no prongs. Fashion Kundan uses glass or crystal stones on a gold-plated base, which keeps it affordable and light. It gives a bright, mirror-like sparkle and is the most popular choice for weddings and Eid.

Polki: uncut diamonds

Polki uses natural, uncut diamonds with their original shape and a softer glow. Real Polki is expensive; "Polki-look" pieces use cut glass or moissanite to imitate it. If a price seems too low for real Polki, it is imitation — which is fine, as long as the listing says so.

Jadau: the craft around it

Jadau describes the traditional craft of embedding stones into molten gold and decorating the piece, often with meenakari (enamel) on the back. Kundan and Polki pieces are often made in the Jadau style.

Which to choose

  • Barat and nikkah: a full Kundan or Polki-look set (necklace, jhumkas, tikka, bangles).
  • Mehndi: lighter Kundan or mirror pieces, or floral jewellery.
  • Walima and dawats: a statement necklace or chandbalis with a lighter outfit.
  • Everyday: small Kundan studs or a pendant.

Caring for it

  • Put jewellery on after perfume and hairspray.
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth; never wash plated pieces.
  • Store each piece in its own pouch or box with silica gel to prevent tarnish.
  • Keep away from water and steam (no jewellery in the shower or kitchen).
